Composer Koji Ueno has been working in a musical field that differs from ‘so-called’ contemporary music. He has been very active in genres such as ‘pop’ and music for film and dance. In spite of these directions, his music is not content to be labelled by them. It is pop as well as serious, fresh as well as old. In other words, it has appeared on the scene as music that can be termed ‘contemporary’ at this very moment. It is a new form of music that can be distinguished from the avant-garde and the experimental. Koji Ueno has created his own field without having much relationship to the mainstream or the anti-mainstream of contemporary music. now that avant-garde music has become obsolete and experimental music is stagnant, Koji Ueno’s music emerges as a fresh power, free from clichés. His music has flexibility that defies boundaries. With this flexibility, Ueno decodes and re-interprets pre-existing styles of music in his individual manner.
					A harsh wind blows out of the past, raging pitilessly about him. What a blessed, a happy solitude is his. Even as he is of these times, still is he being pushed back into the future.
